Cubanacan HR Habano 2000 is coming to Anthony’s Cigar Emporium

Cubanacan HR Habano 2000

The cigar line, called simply HR for Hirochi Robaina’s initials, is rolled in Estelí, Nicaragua at the Cubanacan Cigars Factory S.A.  The Cubanacan Habano 2000 is the result of a project that started three years ago when Omar González Alemán, the master blender at Cubanacan who migrated to Costa Rica from Cuba in 2004, approached Hirochi Robaina with an idea. Alemán, who emigrated from Cuba in 2004,  wanted to create a new cigar brand to honor the Robaina’s family legacy in Cuban cigars, and the cigar that emerged is the full-bodied Cubanacan HR Habano 2000.  The cigars were released at the July ICPCR in 2014.

The patriarch of the family was legendary Cuban tobacco farmer Alejandro Robaina. Alejandro headed the tobacco plantation called Cuchillas de Barbacoa in Pinar del Río, which had been in the family since the mid-1800s, for decades until four years ago, when he died after a long battle with cancer. His grandson Hirochi, who had worked at Alejandro’s side for 14 years, began running the farm in Cuba. Omar Alemán worked in the Cuban tobacco industry since he was nine years old, spending many of those years overseeing the La Corona Cigar Factory, one of the largest factories in Havana where Cuban brands such as Romeo y Julieta, Hoyo de Monterrey, Cuaba, Por Larrañaga, Saint Luis Rey, and San Cristóbal de la Habana are rolled. During this time, Alemán developed a lasting friendship with the elder Alejandro Robaina.

In honor of his compadre Alejandro, Alemán collaborated with Cuban grandson Hirochi Robaina on a blend that uses filler from Nicaragua’s Jalapa Valley and Estelí regions, binder from Jalapa, and a distinctive maduro wrapper grown in Ecuador from Habano 2000 seed. Cubanacan says HR Habano 2000 is powerful. Hirochi Robaina said “I can’t smoke light cigars…I need it to be strong, and flavorful, but definitely strong.”

Very complex, full-flavored, and full-bodied Cubanacan HR Habano 2000 is a true conoisseur’s experience. Though there is no actual Cuban tobacco in the HR, Hirochi’s influence on the blend reflects the balanced and complex Cuban blending style.  This marks the first time that Hirochi Robaina has blended a cigar without using Cuban tobacco.
