Tatuaje Havana VI Verocú

The Tatuaje Havana VI Verocú was released in 2007 as a limited edition line extension to the Havana VI line.  They are an all Nicaraguan blend like the Havana VI, but Tatuaje describes the Verocú as stronger than the Havana VI.  The Verocú has always been part of the Havana VI line, with their boxes displaying “Havana VI Verocú” with a foil red and silver band and box label displaing “Verocú” Tatuaje has made all Verocú sizes regular production.  The sizes include a Toro (Verocú  No. 1, 6 ¼ x 52), a Robusto Grande (Verocú No. 2, 5 ½ x 54), a Corona (Verocú No. 3, 6 x 46), a Robusto (Verocú No. 4, 5 ¼ x 50), a Petite Corona (Verocú  No. 5, 4 x 40) and a Petit Robusto (Verocú No. 9, 4 ½ x 49).  Anthony’s Cigar Emporium will receive all sizes of Verocú next week (with the exception of the Verocú No. 9 which will ship late July after IPCPR Convention).

Pete Johnson, owner of Tatuaje, created the Tatuaje Havana VI line (“red labels”) in 2006.  The success of the Selección de Cazador (“brown labels”) had Don Pepín García’s El Rey de Los Habanos factory in Miami at capacity, being just a small shop of a dozen rollers making premium small batch cigars.  Yet customers were clamoring for more Tatuaje cigars.  The Havana VI, like the Selección de Cazador features fine Nicaraguan tobaccos, but the Havana VI is a Nicaraguan puro while Selección de Cazador have Ecuador Habano wrappers.  The Havana VI is made in Estelí, Nicaragua by Don Pepín García’s My Father Cigars Factory and it is a smoke the rivals, perhaps surpasses the Selección de Cazador.  The Havana VI has a rich, leathery and earthy quality with a heavy dash of pepper.  The spice is very pronounced, resembling a white pepper, with a sharp sweetness like fresh ginger.

Davidoff Escurio Series

Davidoff is introducing a new line that includes a great deal of Brazilian Tobacco: Davidoff Escurio.  After much anticipation and rumor, the Davidoff Escurio was announced in Miami on June 25^th.  Orders can be placed by Davidoff Appointed Merchants at the July IPCPR convention.  Anthony’s Cigar Emporium will be ordering all sizes and Davidoff has promised to begin shipping on July 20^th.  Anthony’s Cigar Emporium will be accepting pre-orders on its website with expected shipping by the end of July, 2015.

The wrapper on the Davidoff Escurio Series is an Ecuadorian Habano, which Davidoff describes as  “dark habano.”  The binder is Brazilian Cubra and the filler is a blend of Dominican (San Vicente, Piloto and Olor/Piloto Seco) and Brazilian (Cubra and Mata Fina).  Davidoff describes the blend as medium bodied with slightly sweet and spicy flavors and complex aromas.  “Get ready for an exciting taste adventure! Rio’s intriguing and rhythmic nights were hugely inspiring for our Master Blenders in helping craft a superb multi-origin blend with the finest Brazilian tobaccos at its core. Davidoff Escurio will take aficionados along on a rewarding taste exploration where sweet meets spice with unexpected twists and turns along the way,” commented Charles Awad, Senior Vice President Global Marketing & Innovation at Oettinger Davidoff AG in a press release.  The name Davidoff Escurio is derived from two words “Escuro” (the Portuguese word for “dark” or “oscuro”) and Rio (i.e. Rio De Janiero, the city in Brazil that inspired this blend).

As Dividoff is described on its website: “From the beginning, the cigar intrigues you when spice meets sweet as Chili pepper plays with softer, creamy notes. Soon this is being complemented in the next phase by flavors of oak, liquorish, salt and leather. Lastly coffee aromas arrive culminating in a finale of charming complexity. As you happen upon new tastes around every corner of this captivating cigar, there is never a dull moment for your palate.”

The Davidoff Escurio Series is a outgrowth of Davidoff’s core brands that feature Dominican binders and fillers under superb wrappers with construction and burn that are the gold standard for premium cigars.  Davidoff began this adventure outside of the Dominican Republic when it produced the highly successful Davidoff Nicaragua, which received a 93 rating by Cigar Aficionado for the Toro.  Davidoff continues to purchase farmland in Nicaragua and is deeply committed to producing a Nicaraguan cigar that meets its exacting standards.  The Davidoff Escurio Series is also produced in black boxes with a black Davidoff blend.  Since Davidoff has the time and resources to fully develop a line before release, these cigars should be silky, oily, and smokable right out of the box.

The Davidoff Escurio will be available in Petit Robusto (3 1/4 x 50), Robusto (4 1/2 x 54) and Gran Toro (5 1/2 x 58) sizes. The cigars will be offered in boxes of 12 or 14 (for the Petite Robusto), along with four-packs. The Robusto will be offered in tubos.  The Robusto received a 93 rating in the Cigar Journal. The review states: “A true sweet meets spice experience, an overall masterpiece, an explosion of different notes comparable to a flavor encyclopaedia.”  The cigar is rolled at the Davidoff factory in the Dominican Republic.

E. P. Carrillo La Historia Regalias d’Celia

E.P. Carrillo is introducing a new size to its signature La Historia line: the EPC La Historia Regalias d’Celia.  The EPC La Historia Regalias d’Celia cigar is a soft pressed short torpedo measuring 5 7/8″ x  58 with beautiful construction, blend and flavor profile exactly like the entire La Historia line.  The quality of construction is evident in the long tapered torpedo cap, providing smokers with the exact ring gauge of the draw in this 58 ring gauge cigar; lest one fall into “big ring gauge syndrome.”

In September 2014, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, owner of EPC Cigar Co., knocked it out of the park with his La Historia line.  Shortly after launch, the cigars performed well in a Cigar Insider vertical tasting, with the brand averaging 90 points, and the La Historia E-III went on to take the No. 2 spot in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2014 with an impressive 95 rating.

The La Historia Regalias d’Celia box-pressed torpedo is being rolled at Ernesto Perez-Carrillo’s Tabacalera de Alianza S.A. in the Dominican Republic.  The new vitola is set for an introduction at the IPCPR trade show this July in New Orleans and Anthony’s Cigar Emporium will surely be ordering some and expecting arrival in late July.

Every size in the La Historia line has a name with special significance to Perez-Carrillo. El Senador is named after Perez-Carrillo’s father, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Sr., who was a senator, and E-III is named after Perez-Carrillo’s son, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo III. Doña Elena is named after Perez-Carrillo’s wife, and the new La Historia Regalias d’Celia is named after his wife’s grandmother.  It is an homage to Perez-Carrillo’s family that helped him build his own vertically integrated cigar company after Ernesto left General Cigar Co. a few years back leaving his legacy in the very popular La Gloria Cubana brand.

“We wanted to expand the line but wanted it to be something that was special, so we debated between a corona size and a torpedo,” Perez-Carrillo told Cigar Aficionado. “Being that there are a lot of torpedos with the standard size of 6 1/8 inches by 52 ring gauge, we decided to make it 5 7/8 by 58 and it smoked great with the La Historia blend—and the fact that it is pressed gave it a unique smoke and character.”

Originally released in 2010, the Viaje TNT, a 6 1/4″ x 54 Toro, was packaged in 75 count flat top wooden boxes resembling dynamite crates.  The Viaje TNT had long “fuse-like” pig-tails and covered foots making them resemble sticks of dynamite.  This marketing theme coincided with their usual June releases arriving just in time for the Fourth of July pyrotechnic celebrations.  The Viaje TNT was a Nicaraguan puro rolled at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras with a rosado sun grown Corojo wrapper.  The Viaje TNT was a limited edition cigar that was released for four consecutive summers that stopped in 2014 when no Viaje TNT cigars were made.

For Summer 2015, Viaje will re-release the TNT but it is no longer a Nicaraguan puro and is now being rolled by Abe Flores’ PDR factory in the Dominican Republic.  The Viaje TNT 2015 will sport a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper.  Like many Viaje small batch releases, Andre Farkas, owner of Viaje, is still pretty secretive about the re-release so there are many details remaining to be filled in, namely the filler blemd which heretofore has been labeled Nicaraguan.  Abe Flores has indicated that he will use a different filler blend, but there hasn’t been much detail released as yet.  Since all of the four previous Viaje TNT releases were 6 1/4″ x 54 Toros, we expect that the 2015 will be the same format along with the long pig tail “fuse” and a covered foot.  The 2015 release will also be packaged in 75 count wooden crates.

Viaje Summerfest 2015

Anthony’s Cigar Emporium has the Viaje Summerfest 2015 IN STOCK.  They just arrived today!

The Viaje Summerfest 2015 Limited Production seasonal release is back this year after not being released last year.  The size is different from previous year’s releases, this time a 6″ x 52 Toro .

Viaje Cigar Co. has moved production of the Viaje Summerfest 2015 from the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras to the TABSA factory (Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A.) in Nicaragua, which is owned by Eduardo Fernández, the principal in tobacco conglomerate Aganorsa S.A.   Viaje has indicated that the blend has changed slightly as well, but the Viaje Summerfest 2015 is still a Nicaraguan puro with a Café Rosado Nicaraguan Corojo 99 and 100% Nicaraguan fillers and binders.  The blend uses tobaccos from Esteli, Condega and Jalapa regions.

Another change: the Viaje Summerfest brushed foot is now going to be replaced by an 1″ unfinished foot with no wrapper.  Andre Farkas, owner of Viaje, has said that with the brushed foot the cigar would sometimes result in flowering during the burn, thus the exposed footer which is not brushed corrects this problem.

At Anthony’s Cigar Emporium we are excited to finally receive the Summerfest after not seeing them for a year and expect that the less strong,  medium to full. and more nuanced flavor profile of coffee, cinnamon spice and earth of the Viaje Summerfest will continue in the 2015 release.

RoMa Craft Neanderthal

The RoMa Craft Neanderthal is the latest release from RoMa Craft, and one of the most full bodied cigars available. Anthony’s Cigar Emporium has already received its shipment of the RoMa Craft Neanderthal and they are in stock now! Skip Martin, owner of RoMa Tobac has been dreaming of making this style of cigar since 2009 when he was working on CroMagnon. The conception for the RoMa Craft Neanderthal really came to fruition when he was introduced to a leaf from the Green River Valley of the US that was a regrowth from Pennsylvania Broadleaf called Pennsylvania Double Ligero. A regrowth leaf emerges when the leaves are cut off of a plant and a second set of leaves grows on the plant before it is removed from the ground. This leaf is added to filler blends from Nicaragua and Dominican Olor and really amps up the strength and nicotine levels. Pennsylvania Double Ligero has twice the nicotine of Ligero primings in Esteli, Nicaragua. Yet the RoMa Craft Neanderthal is smokable and balanced, albeit very strong.  The cigar will debut un a single format, a 5 x 52/56 figurado ( a tapered torpedo) with a flat cap and a rounded foot.

The RoMa Craft Neanderthal has a dark and shiny Mexican San Andres Maduro wrapper, usually a warning for novice smokers, that along with a US Connecticut Broadleaf binder give the cigar a strong and sweet tobacco taste on the back of the palate while spice and rich soil are the primary flavors. The tapered, pyramid shape intensifies the flavors and strength as the cigar is smoked and the rich tars of the Pennsylvania Double Ligero build up. Be warned, this cigar is not for amateurs.  Skip Martin has said:”It wasn’t until I found the Pennsylvania Double Ligero, a regrowth leaf with two to three times the nicotine levels of our other tobaccos, that I had the components I needed to produce what I was looking for.”

RoMa Craft was a joint venture between  Skip Martin and Michael Rosales that was first formed in 2011.  This is the newest boutique company to take the connoisseur world by storm.  It has its own production facilities in Esteli, Nicaragua called the Fabrica de Tabacos Nica Sueño.

God of Fire Serie Aniversario

In 2012, Keith K. Park, owner of Prometheus, announced that Prometheus was planning a special Prometheus’ 20th anniversary release under its God of Fire brand, made by Fuente, called the God of Fire Serie Aniversario.  The release has seen many delays, particularly due to the fire in the Fuente factory in August 2012 that destroyed many vintage tobaccos.  The God of Fire Serie Aniversario is finally being released this July in homage to the 10th anniversary of the God of Fire brand.  The God of Fire Serie Aniversario has the premium Dominican filler and binder blend of the God of Fire with an Ecuadorian wrapper.  The blend itself resembles the God of Fire by Don Carlos which also has an Ecuadorian wrapper and blended by Carlos Fuente Sr. “Don Carlos.”

However the comparison stops there.  The wrappers are a deeper brown than the God of Fire by Don Carlos and all three formats are beautifully rolled oily perfectos with no visible veins.   The God of Fire Serie Aniversario is the richest God of Fire yet.  The God of Fire Serie Aniversario formats include the God of Fire Serie Aniversario 54 (7 1/2 x 54), God of Fire Serie Aniversario 56 (6 1/2 x 56) and the God of Fire Serie Aniversario 60 (5 1/2 x 60). The cigars will be packaged in special black God of Fire boxes of 10 that are serial numbered with a certificate of authenticity.  Actual release figures have not been disclosed as yet, but they will be very limited like all Prometheus’ God of Fire, Opus X Lost City, and Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario.
