The 2022 pair of Viaje Geisha are some truly wonderful cigars. After smoking both of them and taking the time to compare notes as well as gather opinions, there is one consensus I continue to hear…these are remarkably similar. Both start with some strong chocolate, leather, and towards the end of the first third develop a pitasicao nut flavor. In the second both begin to have more earthy tones and decrease in sweetness levels in favor of balance, and both have some espresso notes to round out the cigar.
However there are some distinct differences between the two in the complexity and specific details of the flavor profile. In general, the Corojo was sweeter, adding a coffee creamer not throughout the cigar and allowing for a citrus sweetness to be quite prominent throughout. The San Andres however added some unique campfire smoke taste along with a fairly unique vanilla note.
One thing to say on both cigars, is they likely deserve some time in the humidor. The San Andres suffers far more in this than the Corojo, however both had multiple areas of heavy acidity and sour notes. These seem as though some age would rid them of these issues, however the Corojo specifically is incredible despite this.
From what I have heard from others this seems to be the case across the board. While many people prefer the earthy tones and stronger profile of the San Andres, nearly everyone said that these cigars need some time to rest and allow for their flavors to mellow out. If you do this, you likely will be rewarded with one of, if not THE, best release of viaje in years.
The Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro features a dense Plantation Grown Mata Fina wrapper, over a Connecticut River Valley Broadleaf binder with fillers from Nicaragua.
Manufactured at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate, the Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro was blended by Willy Herrera.
“The Herrera Brazilian Maduro is my expression of the floral and earthy Brazilian Mata Fina tobacco. We use it typically as a binder or accent tobacco in the filler but I wanted to showcase its dynamic and unique texture.”

The first Mexican San Andres wrapped cigar for Joya De Nicaragua, the Joya Black is one of the more popular cigars for the brand. With strong notes of sweet fruit, cocoa, wood, and that signature Joya spice.
During a press release, Mario Perez, the factory manager of Joya had this to say about the Joya Black:
“We have had these wrappers available for some time and we wanted to create a blend with rich Nicaraguan tobacco, yet without the overpowering strength. The result is a balanced, rich and pleasant smoking experience”
With 90+ ratings from all over the internet, I would say they accomplished it.
The second collaboration of Gurkha with TAA, the Nicaraguan series is a full bodied cigar in every sense of the word. A balanced smoke all the way through, a mixture of pepper, earth and leather. Beautifully accented with a subtle creaminess and cinnamon flavor. Although the initial light is incredibly peppery, it smooths itself within the next couple puffs.
The first third of the cigar is distinguished by dominant notes of peppery flavors, dancing across your tongue like wildfire. Part way though the third the profile opens up to earth and leather taking center stage.
As you get to the second third a vanilla creaminess comes out of nowhere, accented by a hint of cinnamon on the back palate as well as retrohale.
The pepper dies down to a subtle white pepper, before reappearing strong in the last third of the cigar. The flavors round out by adding a notes of nuts to the pepper and earth in the last third of the cigar.
All around a medium- full bodied cigar filled with pepper leather and earth. A smoke worthy of an avid cigar smoker who is in the mood for something a little off the beaten path.
